The faster you can get to the ground, the sooner you can grab a weapon and wrack up some quick kills. Your glider will auto deploy whenever it reaches a certain height from your current location. Someone auto deploying at the top of a mountain will start to glide much higher than someone deploying above a river in a valley. Avoid going over hills, houses, trees, and other high points that could cause you to deploy early. Using this information, try getting as low as possible so you can reach buildings and rooftops faster.
Landing somewhere near the edge of the map? Dive down towards the ocean to auto deploy relative to the water. This is a little trick to get a lower landing.
